Zebra Moray Eel
The Zebra Moray Eel is really quite peaceful and moves quite slow…
The Zebra Moray Eel is an eye catching and extremely docile species that derives its name from the bold pattern of bars on its body. You can see it from the Hawaiian Islands southward to Polynesia, westward across the tropical Pacific Ocean to the Philippines and East Indies, and across the Indian Ocean to the coast of Africa. Also occurs off Panama, the Galapagos Islands, and Mexico. This particular eel is one of the smaller in the moray family and can reach two to three feet in length. One of the most docile of saltwater moray species, the Zebra Eel is naturally reclusive and stays hidden with only its head sticking out, emerging to hunt for food. A bottom-dwelling carnivore, the Zebra Eel has blunt, pebble-like teeth for crushing its favorite prey, crustaceans. It is not uncommon for eels to go into a “hibernation” period, often hiding and not eating for several weeks, or longer.
